Mesmerised By Moni
Hot, Glamorous, Exotic, Sultry, Sexy… and many more adjectives would still not suffice, if you are trying to describe supermodel Monikangana Dutta in words. With unconventional looks that sweep off every male off his feet, this creator’s mystery has set the international ramp in dazed wonder. The bold, ‘Doe-Eyed’ (As she’s known in the industry) supermodel started her career with the Miss Luit Contest...
THE ECLECTIC (TE): HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE MONIKANGANA DUTTA?
Monikangana Dutta (MD): Well it feels great. Because to be Monikangana Dutta, I’ve gone through a lot of hurdles in life. And it feels good to be a self-made girl, to do things on your own, and not having to depend on your family or anyone else for that matter. It’s a great feeling that everybody should experience.
TE: WE’VE SEEN YOU ON ELLE, VOGUE INDIA ETC. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE ON THE COVER OF SOME OF THE MOST HAPPENING MAGAZINES?
MD: I’ve shot for Elle for a lot of times, about eight issues, I presume. But shooting for Vogue India was mindblowing. I never thought that they’re going to approach me for the shoot with all the big stars from Bollywood and international models like Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Gemma Ward and Laxmi Menon. It was a very nice feeling and I felt very proud of myself to be associated with it.

TE: HOW AND WHEN DID IT ALL START?
MD: I got into modelling more out of compulsion than choice. And the first person who forced me to join Miss Luit was Medha Saikia. I did and I became the first runner-up. I went to Delhi after that because I was already studying there, and then I got the chance to go to Paris Fashion Week. From there, I started my modelling career very seriously.
TE: RECENTLY WE HEARD THAT YOU MIGHT GET INTO BOLLYWOOD. IS THERE ANYTHING GOING ON?
MD: Nothing has been fixed as yet. So I can’t talk about it. If I actually sign a movie, I’ll tell the media myself.
TE: WHO’S YOUR FAVOURITE INTERNATIONAL SUPERMODEL?
MD: Sophia Loren. I’ve been following her since I was a kid. I used to collect books on her. I think she’s the most naturally beautiful and gorgeous model I’ve ever seen in my life.
TE: DO YOU HAVE AN IDOL?
MD: Honestly speaking I don’t have any idol.
TE: WHICH PRODUCTS HAVE YOU ENDORSED SO FAR?
MD: So far, I’ve done an ad for Nokia, a TV commercial that’s going to come out next year. I’ve also done a cameo for a very famous director. And a little bit of shooting here and there for catalogues.
TE: WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE NE FASHION SCENE?

MD: I think we fi rst need to look after the literacy in the Northeast and then talk about something like the fashion scene. Because unless people are educated they wouldn’t understand the fashion scene.
TE: DO YOU BELIEVE IN THE SUPERNATURAL?
MD: I do. At times, I have experienced some kind of supernatural power around me very often. I still do. It’s very much positive of course.
TE: ARE YOU SCARED OF ANYTHING?
MD: I’m scared of spirits.
TE: WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE FOOD?
MD: Ghar ka khana. My mom’s homemade food. I miss it terribly.
TE: DO YOU COOK?
MD: I can do some basic stuff like chana, dal, rice, some sabjis. That’s all. I’m not a cook.
TE: HAVE YOU EVER DONE ADVENTURE SPORTS?
MD: No. I’ve been a pretty careless person. Not adventurous at all. I had played table tennis for two years, did a little bit of swimming, but I quit both eventually. I’d like to play golf someday though. I like the whole idea about the beautiful field and the concept of the golf game. But I haven’t been able to find time to do so. Because in Mumbai, with the obnoxious traffic jam, it would take ages for you to reach places. So you have to think twice before doing anything.
TE: WHAT IS YOUR WILDEST FANTASY?
MD: Till now it has been to marry my dream man and settle down.

TE: GIVEN A CHANCE, WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO DATE?
MD: From India, it has to be Hrithik Roshan. From Hollywood, I think it would be Jude Law.
TE: WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST ASSET?
MD: I think it’s all of me. I think I’m a nice human being from inside and that’s my biggest asset.
TE: WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE HANGOUT?
MD: Miami. I loved lazing out there. In India, I’d love to spend a week in Goa.
TE: HOW DO YOU RELAX?
MD: I love taking body massages. Because the amount of travelling I do, the body tends to get stressed out. I take the basic amount of care. I try to sleep a lot, eat only at home, read books, watch TV, and occasionally go out for dinner with friends.

TE: ARE YOU WORKING ON ANY PROJECT RIGHT NOW?
MD: Th ere are many things coming up. You’ll get to know after I get into it properly.
TE: WHAT DO YOU THINK IS NEEDED TO BECOME A SUCCESSFUL INTERNATIONAL SUPERMODEL?
MD: You have to basically stand out from the crowd. You have to have a different personality inside as well as outside. You have to carry your own special image. It can be anything for that matter. But it has to be your own. Besides, a great attitude, I think definitely works in the modelling career. I am a bold person and I carry my boldness in my attitude. I think that makes me stand out among all other tall, good looking people who are there otherwise.
TE: WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SAY TO OUR READERS AND ALL YOUR FANS?
MD: Try to concentrate on what you want to do rather than wasting time on what you don’t want to do. Doing what you want to do is not easy. Do something where you think the future is.
