Ambubachi Mela a celebration of femininity

The Kamakhya temple at Guwahati has a history that dates back to time immemorial. The site at which the temple exists is supposed to be the place where the yoni of the goddess Sati is supposed to have fallen when Shiva carried her incinerated body around the cosmos in anguish. It is one of the major Shakti shrines in India where the worship of the female component, i.e. energy takes place.

This year too, there was much action happening in this capital city of the colourful Northeastern state of Meghalaya. The Autumn Festival 2007 was a weekend long celebration from 26th October ‘07 till November 4th ‘07 with various exciting events taking place in Shillong City and its suburbs as a run up to the Grand Finale at the Orchid Lake Resort, Umiam. Kameshwari Dance and Music Festival

Sponsored by Bharti Airtel Limited, the Kameshwari Dance and Music festival was held in Maa Kamakhya Temple, Guwahati on 14th and 15th of January. With eminent classical dancers like Padma Vibhushan Sonal Man Singh, one of the lading exponents of Odissi dance, Padmashree Shovana Narayan, the undisputed ‘Kathak queen’ and Indira P.P. Bora, and vocalists like Padma Bhushan Pandits Rajan and Sajan Mishra, the foremost exponents of Benaras Vocal Gharana, the festival was a classical bonanza.
